Firewood plus...

At first glance this is obvious- we've been gathering firewood. All good and this will keep us warm in winter.
But the best bit- the trees were also nitrogen fixing trees. In this case they're wattles- and you can see some of them got way too big, so it was definitely time for them to be felled.
The nitrogen fixing trees are great in the Food Forest - you get firewood, and you get your soil given a nice nitrogen boost when the trees are chopped down.
What I really value though with the nitrogen fixing trees is that they grow fast. So when I'm starting a new Food Forest they're the first trees to go in- they create a nice forest canopy quickly and give the new fruit trees a bit of shelter.
I did lie about the nitrogen fixing trees being the first trees planted - I mean who can resist not planting fruit trees first - not me that's for sure 😃
