Details

Treat yourself to a stay in the beautiful Tinui Food Forest and learn more about what makes food forests magic places to be in.

The Food Forest Cottage is a comfortable 3-bedroom cottage. It is located at the top of a hill overlooking the Tinui Food Forest, and the original homestead for what used to be one of the main farms in the area. The cottage is surrounded by trees, and the bird life is wonderful.

The Tinui Food Forest is set in 4 acres of mature food forest and provides a fun and educational adventure for the whole family to explore. Staying with us gives you open access to explore the food forest.

Lose yourself in the living willow maze! Sit in the hop tepee, or the other living willow furniture- including the world first unique living willow chaise longue.

The friendly farm animals are always happy to meet up. Hand feed the alpaca and hang out with the goats, pigs (including Ralf and Peaches the kunekune pigs), cuddle with the goats, and check the chooks for eggs!

We also provide complementary 2 hour guided walks around the food forest for guests- just let us know when you make you arrive at the cottage if you are keen to go for a guided walk. The walk is a bit less beautiful at the moment thanks to Cyclone Gabrielle, but you can still enjoy being in a food forest and learning about them.

We have Starlink fast internet provided and a 40inch TV set up with google chromecast.

The shared swimming pool is available for guests.

All linen and towels provided.

We provide tea (English Breakfast), sugar, instant and plunger coffee, and milk.

Condiments such as salt, pepper, oil and flour are in the kitchen.

What our guests say:

"The picturesque, private and peaceful location of the Tinui Food Forest Cottage makes for a very relaxing get-away break from the city. The cottage had all the facilities we needed, including a real fireplace to keep the evening cool at bay and the husband happy tending it. It's self-catering, so we brought our own food, but were delighted by the complimentary home-made plum jam and eggs from the free-range hens on the farm. The friendly and generous owners Debs and Ray Butterfield also encouraged us to take some veges for dinner from the amazing organic food forest. Asking Debs for a guided tour is recommended, because her knowledge is immense and it is great to hear the details of how this huge treasure trove of a garden/orchard/farm sustains itself, with a load of love and tons of work. Do what the sign says, try eating the weeds - it's a revelation. And you have to meet the alpacas, pigs, chickens, goats, guinea fowl, and dogs. Then there is the gorgeous starry night sky, bursting with brilliance. It's as zen an experience as a yoga retreat in Bali. All just a short drive to scenic Castlepoint Beach."

"My husband and I had a lovely week long stay at the Tinui Food Forest Cottage. The spacious cottage is like a home. More than providing the basics it is fully furnished and has country character. There is an old time picturesque wood fueled stove oven. (That one is no longer in use.The more modern one in use works well.) There are pleasing mosaics in the cottage as well as throughout the property. The bed is very comfortable. This is a quiet place in a pretty setting. At night the stars shine against the dark sky.

We enjoyed all the animals! One of the cheerful little dogs is timid and the other is outgoing and can become a fast friend if his chosen pine cone is thrown for him just once!

We were unfamiliar with a food forest and learned much. Now we know that even with a small property some Food Forest concepts can be adapted.

We were very pleased to meet our hosts, Deb and Ray. Visiting time with them was a treat.

We highly recommend staying at the the Food Forest Cottage."
